Maldives Correctional Services (MCS) has begun procedures to transfer former Defense Minister Colonel (Rtd) Mohamed Nazim back to prison.

Nazim, who is currently serving an 11-year jail term on weapons possession charges, was shifted home on May 26th in time for the month of Ramadan.

A family member of Nazim confirmed to Raajje.mv that MCS officers were in his residence of M. Seenukarankaage to transfer him back.

Nazim had been serving his sentence in house arrest until March 29th when he was transferred to jail and back again to house arrest a month later.

United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (UNWGAD) had decreed that Nazim’s arrest, detention and trial were against legal proceedings and called on the Government of Maldives to free Nazim. The Group had also called on the Government to pay reparations to Nazim as well.

The Criminal Court ruling on Nazim was upheld by High Court and his appeal was thrown out of Supreme Court.

His transfer came hours after former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb sent a letter to Supreme Court claiming Nazim was innocent of the charges against him.
