Every island will have a backup generator system: Shareef
Additional system will be placed in each island
Target is to finish this by September
Bidding process ongoing

FENAKA Corporation’s Managing Director Ahmed Shareef says the company will install a backup generator system in each inhabited island in the Maldives to address the electricity issues.

He made the statement speaking in RaajjeTV’s ‘Sungadi’ program regarding the electricity issues in Alifushi island in Raa Atoll and Nadella island in Gaaf Dhaal Atoll.

Shareef said the issue stems from lack of resource personnel who can attend to issues with generators and spares that need to be flown in.

He noted that engines are subject to wear and tear, adding that the Government is working to resolve the issue. As such, a backup generator system will be installed in every island.

Shareef said they target to finish this process by end of this year and that the bidding process was ongoing.

‘Right now, our target is to place a system and a backup system in every island. The bidding process is ongoing. We target to place a backup system before end of September,’ he said.

The statements come at a time when public criticism had risen over regular power outages in many islands, in spite of the ‘Current Yageen’ pledge, which pledges to provide uninterrupted service.
