Ex-VP Adeeb's threat of flight can be minimized, says UN Rapporteur Ahmed Shaheed

UN Special Rapporteur Ahmed Shaheed has said that the state has several ways in which to ensure that former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb does not flee, even if he intends to do so.
Shaheed, who had also previously served as Foreign Ministry, said in a series of tweets earlier on Monday that the state could manage to reduce the risk of flight in several ways.
"What about military hospitals? What about bilateral agreement options?" one of his tweets said.
Attorney General Mohamed Anil said at a press conference last week that the state is refusing to grant Adeeb medical leave due to threat of flight.
Anil then said that the former vice president owes the state over USD 10 million, and that there is strong reason to believe that he may flee.
Adeeb’s family had released a statement earlier this month claiming that Adeeb has developed an internal cyst, kidney stones, and vision impairment from glaucoma since his incarceration in 2015.
Saheed further said that the Maldivian government's bid to win a seat at the United Nations' Human Rights Council this year will not succeed.

Shaheed had previously filed the state’s refusal to grant former Adeeb medical leave from incarceration with multiple branches of the UN.
Shaheed had also announced that he had made an appointment for Adeeb, who is serving a thirty-three-year jail sentence. The appointment was made with fellow UN Rapporteur, Dr. Dainius Pūras.
The former vice president’s family has reportedly shared the relevant medical documents with Shaheed.
