AG statement shows how weak the government is: Hassan Latheef
AG Anil said Adeeb posed a flight risk
Govt. refused to grant medical release for Adeeb
Reasons showed by Govt. are unacceptable

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) chairperson Hassan Latheef says the statement by Attorney General Mohamed Anil shows exactly how weak the current administration is.

Attorney General earlier on Tuesday said that the jailed former vice president Ahmed Adeeb was kept in incarceration as he posed a flight risk.

Speaking in RajjeTV’s ‘Fala Suruhee’ program on Tuesday night, Hassan Latheef said the reasons showed by the government were 'weak and unacceptable'. He said that Adeeb cannot be barred from receiving medical treatment, adding that he must be taken abroad with the assistance of police and the army.

Hassan Latheef added that Adeeb’s family was making the claims that he had developed kidney stones and internal cysts because of the medical reports. The family, he said was stressing on sending him abroad as doctors had recommended it.

Hassan also questioned who will take on the responsibility if the former Vice President succumbs to his various conditions while in injuries.

The Government earlier on Tuesday, had claimed they had not restricted medical treatment, adding that Adeeb was more than welcome to bring in experts from abroad. AG also said Adeeb owed the state over US$ 10 million and that if he went abroad this amount will never be recovered.

Hassan Latheef pointed out the illogical nature of the claim made by the Government. He questioned what would happen to recovering the money, if Adeeb had died in prison.

He stressed that he did not believe that a fair investigation can be carried out into the graft of MMPRC, unless there was an environment that was conducive to a free and fair elections.
