Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom has said that his half brother former President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Gayyoom was dejected and angry when Maumoon talked about the mistakes made by Yaameen government.

Speaking on VTV, President Maumoon admitted there were serious problems between the two brothers. There were cases of extortion, corruption and lack of justice during the Yameen administration. and that it led to differences of opinion between them , he said .

Speaking on the program, President Maumoon said he was not happy with such things as he too had worked hard to bring Yameen to power. Maumoon said many from his family and party visited the cities and the provinces with President Yameen to secure votes for him.

So if the government is not going the right way, he felt he has some responsibility to get it back on track, he said, adding that it is something easy to say, but very difficult to do.

When I started talking about these things, Yameen was not happy with it and he was angry, so there were differences of opinion. I don't believe that things that had happened then should have happened that way. So I voiced my opinion , and when I did so, it became a problem , as he was the President

As mentioned by President Maumoon, the PPM government, or President Yameen’s administration had arrested President Maumoon on the night of February 5th 2018, for alleged obstruction of Justice charges.

The Criminal Court sentenced him to one year, seven months and six days in jail on a charge of obstruction of justice.

The Supreme Court ordered the arrest of President Maumoon on charges of attempting to overthrow the government and charges of terrorism. He was ordered to remain in remand jail pending trial and was transferred to Maafushi jail. However, due to his health condition, he was transferred to Dhoonidhoo jail at the repeated request of his family.

President Maumoon’s prison sentence was pardoned in August of 2018. He was in custody at the time , and repeated his stand that he had not committed any criminal offence.

President Yameen, on the other hand claimed that the PPP government arrested former President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom not while he was innocent , and said President Maumoon was arrested because he had violated the rights of the state.

He also accused former President Maumoon of being the chief mastermind behind the attempted overthrow of the state through the Supreme Court. He said the government was forced to arrest him for doing so, adding that it was not President Yameen's own decision.
