State Electrictric Company (STELCO) has said that the power outage in capital city Malé earlier on Thursday was caused by a faulty cable.

STELCO’s media official, Ibrahim Rauf, said that the power outage – which lasted for over an hour –  had affected one-fourth of Malé.

The STELCO has 27 generators, with a set new ones that produce 72 megawatts per unit.

Power outages have been frequent in the capital city as of late. On 28th May, a number of areas in Malé were left without power for hours after several generators had reportedly malfunctioned.
