Velana Airport concludes reclamation for passenger terminal

The Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has completed reclaiming land off the South West border of the Velana International Airport, which is to hold international passenger terminal.
The MACL first announced its completion in a tweet on Thursday.
The company told RaajjeMV that its now proceeding with sheet piling for the 7.8-hectare terminal. The MACL has assigned this work to the Saudi Binladin Group.
Another post on the company’s twitter account reveals that the MACL has successfully overseen the foundation of a new airplane complex and design work is now underway, which is a project of MVR 56 million.

The MACL said that this complex will be in use by August this year. The complex will hold administrative offices and security outlets for the airport.
While there is also a runway extension underway, which falls onto the location previously used to dock seaplanes. The MACL has also begun a project to reclaim another area to be used as a base and landing area for amphibian aircrafts.
The company has reclaimed 1.83 hectares for this purpose, and will ideally be usable by 2018, the MACL said.
