The Government of Maldives has stated that it unreservedly condemns all and any action that attempts to demean the Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) and Islam.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement Monday on behalf of the Government of Maldives, stating that the Government unreservedly condemns all and any action that purports to pervert the true nature and teachings of Islam and attempts to demean the holy Prophet Muhammed (PBUH).

The statement expressed the governments condemnation and denunciation of the offensive statements made by 2 officials of Indian BJP Party, insulting the holy Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) and the religion of Islam.

Additionally, the statement highlights that the Government of Maldives welcomes the denouncement by the Government of India of the derogatory remarks by the concerned officials and the prompt action taken by BJP against those officials.

India is facing a major diplomatic outrage after two BJP spokespersons, Nupur Sharma and Naveen Kumar Jindal, made derogatory references to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

The BJP suspended Sharma and expelled Jindal on Sunday for their statements. The party has categorically distanced itself from their views stating they are "fringe elements" , and that their views are not the view of the Indian government .

Additionally, the government of India has also made it clear that it accords the "highest respect to all religions".

Many Islamic Countries and organizations have been condemning and taking action over the comments by the two Indian officials . India’s ambassadors to Kuwait, Qatar and Iran were summoned on Sunday to receive official notes of protest over the comments, and Pakistan’s ministry of foreign affairs issued a statement condemning the “highly derogatory remarks” and the BJP’s response.

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation – the second-largest intergovernmental organization in the world after the United Nations, with a collective population reaching over 1.8 billion – also added its voice to the condemnation. In Cairo, Al-Azhar Al-Sharif also expressed strong condemnation and denunciation of the remarks by the two politicians.

Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Dr. Nayef Falah Mubarak Al-Hajraf also expressed strong condemnation and denunciation of the statements by the BJP officials. He too reaffirmed GCC's permanent rejection of prejudice against the symbols of all religious figures and symbols.
