The prices of the locally grown tropical almonds have hiked up to MVR 800 a kilogram.

The prices of tropical almonds in the local market are now MVR 50 for 75 grams, MVR 180 for 250 grams, upto MVR 800 for a kilogram.

While the price hikes are credited to a fall in production, the biggest local producers of tropical almonds are Landhoo in Noonu atoll, Foakaidhoo of Shaviyani atoll, and Malhodhoo of Haa Alifu atoll.

The biggest producers of tropical almonds are Foakaidhoo of Shaviyani atoll and Molhadhoo of Haa Alifu atoll. The price hike is due to a fall in production.

However, merchants at the local market said that the demand for tropical almonds have risen since the start of Ramadan. While merchants sell up to five to ten kilograms are day, they say its production is estimated to rise.

Merchants maintained that while production is estimated to rise, they do not believe there is going to be much change to prices.
