Germany concerned over political situation in Maldives: MP Abdulla Shahid
Germany will assist Maldives in reinstating the rule of law and ensuring democratic principles, Abdulla Shahid said
Previously, Germany had also expressed concern over recent arrests of members of the opposition
It also urged the government to stop ‘harassing’ the media, parliamentarians, and civil society

Germany will assist Maldives in reinstating the rule of law and ensuring democratic principles, former parliament speaker Abdulla Shahid said.

Shahid, who is currently a sitting MP as well, is in Berlin with a delegation of Maldivian politicians, along with former President Mohamed Nasheed.

He had thanked Andreas Witte in a tweet for calling on Nasheed after he had spoken to DW News about various issues concerning the country, including climate change and growing radicalization.

Previously, Germany had also expressed concern over recent arrests of members of the opposition.

“The disturbing news about the ensuing harassment of opposition politicians is contrary to democratic standards” the statement said, in addition to also maintaining that the vote on the no-confidence motion ‘clearly violated the rules of procedure of the Parliament’ the German government had said.

It also urged the government to stop ‘harassing’ the media, parliamentarians, and civil society.
