The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has said on Tuesday that the Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) will be the sole collector of trash for households in capital city Malé.

This policy will be enacted from the 1st of July.

While it previously fell under the mandate of the City Council to manage waste in the capital, the Housing Ministry currently handles all the waste.

WAMCO had divided Malé city into 10 domestic zones, in what the corporation described as a bid to systematize waste management in the capital.

The corporation held collection runs for zone one, from Kalaafaanu School to Adi Park, in December 2016.

Most houses hire expatriate workers who are often employed by multiple households and carry large amounts on bicycles. Due to a lack of enforced regulations, bags of trash can often spill onto the road.

Further, the waste from Malé is often not separated, resulting in diverse waste streams complicating the incineration process.
