President's Office defines mandate for Fuvahmulah council
Thursday’s changes to the council’s conduct and powers have already been applied to the city councils in Addu and Malé cities

President Yameen had earlier passed the government-sponsored amendments to the Decentralization Act, which have been described as disappointing

President Abdulla Yameen has on Thursday brought several changes to the Fuvahmulah City Council, under the authority granted to him by a recent amendment to the Decentralization Act

The President’s Office announced that the decision was made after a cabinet meeting on Thursday. The spokesperson for President Yameen said that the decision aims to ensure that all city councils in the country are functioning uniformly.

Thursday’s changes to the council’s conduct and powers have already been applied to the city councils in Addu and Malé cities.

The President’s Office had insisted that the changes brought on Thursday will not affect the services provided by local councils, despite being explicitly dictated by the President’s Office.

In April, President Yameen had passed the government-sponsored amendments to the Decentralization Act, which drastically altered the composition of the board of directors to the Local Government Authority (LGA) and the 42nd article of the act, which defines the powers of the local council act.
