Maldives recorded over 15,000 tourist arrivals within the first nine days of June.

According to the statistics publicized by the Ministry of Tourism, a total of 15,559 tourist arrivals were recorded from 1-9 June, with the highest arrivals recorded on June 6; 2,308 visitors.

The stats also show that there has been a total of 469,942 tourist arrivals so far this year, a 22.8 percent increase compared to the same period last year and a 40.2 decrease from the previous year. 92,103 arrivals were recorded in January, 96,882 in February, 109,585 in March, 91,200 in April, and 64,613 in May.

While authorities in May suspended travel from South Asia due to the country’s worsening Covid-19 situation, this could have led to the low numbers that month.

As per the ministry’s report, Russia is the top source market for tourism so far this year with 111,628 arrivals recorded by June 9.

India is in second with 89,499 arrivals while the third-leading source market is Germany with 25,935 arrivals.

Noting that tourism was affected after the fourth wave of Covid-19 hit the Maldives, Tourism Minister Dr. Abdulla Mausoom said that it had been “low season” and that they are still certain of meeting this year’s arrivals target; 1.5 million visitors.

There are currently 30 international airlines operating to Maldives, with 10 offering charter services.
