The People's Majlis has approved the appointment of Mohamed Shafeeq Mahmood of M. Poppy as a member of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM).
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu had submitted the names of two individuals for appointment to the HRCM due to the expiration of two members' terms this September. The president nominated Mohamed Faris Thoha of H. Sosan and Mohamed Shafeeq Mahmood of M. Poppy, for the position.
Among them, Mohamed Shafeeq Mahmood was approved for appointment to the position during Monday's parliament sitting with 65 votes in favor. No lawmaker voted against his appointment.
The name of Mohamed Faris Thoha, who was also nominated by President Muizzu for HRCM membership, was not approved by the parliament. His appointment was not greenlighted due to the surfacing of domestic violence allegations against him. However, he has denied these allegations.
The HRCM membership position was advertised twice.
Opportunities to apply for the position were opened in both June and July, though the President's Office did not disclose the reason for reopening applications for a second time.
