Fazeel , the Deputy Managing Director of MWSC, has been dismissed from his position amidst allegations of fraudulently allocated land plots

Fazeel is suspected of submitting forged documents claiming ownership of one of the disputed land plots and allegedly constructed a boundary wall on the plot without permission

Mohamed Fazeel Rasheed, who has been serving as the Deputy Managing Director of Malé Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC), who faces numerous allegations in connection with the case of fraudulently allocated land plots through the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), has been dismissed from his position.

Fazeel is the elder brother of Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed, who resigned from the position of Managing Director of the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) following the surfacing of the land plot scandal. In connection with the case, Fazeel was suspended from his position as Deputy Managing Director of MWSC since 19 December 2024.

His termination is effective from 9 July 2025.

Taking to social media platform ‘X’ on Tuesday, MWSC revealed that the company's Board of Directors has decided to dismiss Fazeel from his position starting Wednesday. The post highlighted that the decision was made by the Board of Directors to protect the company's interests, and that the Board believes it is not in the company's best interest to keep someone in a high-ranking position with full salary for an extended period while an investigation is ongoing.

At the time, Fazeel's younger brother, Fazul was serving as the Managing Director of HDC. He was appointed to that position at a ministerial level. Fazul resigned from his position after being suspended due to corruption allegations. In connection with the case, Fazeel is suspected of submitting forged documents claiming to be the owner of one of the land plots involved.

Regarding the case, Fazul earlier stated that he had no personal interest in the issue and that it was a coincidence that such a case emerged in relation to his elder brother. While the case is being investigated as a criminal matter, the Maldives Police Service (MPS) stated that on 20 December 2024, they had confiscated the passports of 20 individuals. In addition to this, on the night of 23 December 2024, the police searched M. Zeyvaru, the residence of former HDC Managing Director Fazul. During the search, some electronic items were reportedly confiscated.

In a press conference held following the emergence of the case, Fazul denied the allegations pinned against him. He also stated that permission to build a boundary wall on the disputed land plot had not been granted. However, despite claiming that permission for a boundary wall had not been given, the plot in question already has a boundary wall constructed. Fazeel, Fazul's elder brother, is suspected of having built the boundary wall.
