A large group of residents in Inguraidhoo island of Raa atoll has staged a protest accusing the current government of sidelining their island in national development initiatives.
Many members of the island community participated in the protest, which was held on Tuesday evening.
During the protest, where participants carried boards with various slogans, there were also calls for the resignation of Ibrahim Falah, the Leader of the main ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) Parliamentary Group and Member of Parliament for Inguraidhoo constituency.
Protesters said that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu had made many promises for the development of the island, but to date, no development projects have been carried out. They also stated that projects initiated by the previous government have been halted. Demonstrators voiced frustration over what they described as months of neglect, calling for immediate attention to infrastructure, public services, and economic opportunities.
Further, protesters said that the new health center building, new school building, and harbor development project are not progressing. They also mentioned that there has been no practical work on the new police station building, new council office building, volleyball court, badminton court, and youth center establishment. In addition to this, demonstrators stressed that the practical work of modernizing the roads is not progressing.
The infuriated demonstrators said that many questions have arisen regarding the island's development, and the government needs to be held accountable to the people. They stated that as the government approaches its one and a half year mark, it has been proven that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu is incapable of fulfilling his promises.
The protesters also said that although they had high hopes for the current government, they now have no hope left. They added that the government will only listen if people take to the streets and raise their voices, and that they will continue to hold protests in series until the government responds regarding the development projects.
