The National Integrity Commission (NIC) has stated that they are investigating the circumstances surrounding an incident where a person detained at the Kulhudhuffushi City Police Station attempted suicide.

Taking to social media platform ‘X’, NIC said that they received information about a person under police custody attempting suicide around 09:12pm on Friday night. The commission's emergency response team is actively working to determine how the incident occurred, according to NIC.

The Maldives Police Service (MPS) revealed that a Maldivian in custody at the Kulhudhuffushi Custodial had attempted suicide on Friday night.

In a statement released by the police, it was stated that a person in custody at the Kulhudhuffushi Police Custodial attempted suicide around 09:12pm on April 4. The police institution also revealed that he is currently receiving treatment at Kulhudhuffushi Hospital. The hospital has reported that his condition is serious and he is being treated on ventilator support.

The police institution has highlighted that the individual was taken into police custody on April 2 in connection with a case of causing property damage and creating unrest while intoxicated. According to the statement, he is a 34-year-old Maldivian man.

Further, MPS said that they have taken necessary measures regarding this incident and had informed the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) and the National Integrity Commission (NIC) about the incident. The statement also highlighted that a team from Major Crime Investigation has been decided to be sent to Kulhudhuffushi to investigate the incident.

In addition to this, police stated that a special investigation into how this incident occurred is being carried out by the Police Professional Standards Command with high priority.
