Abbas Shareef has been appointed as the Prosecutor General of Maldives.

According to the President’s Office, the ceremony to officially appoint Abbas as PG was held at the President’s Office on Wednesday.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu presented his Letter of Appointment during Wednesday’s ceremony.

The appointment was made in accordance with Article 221 of the Constitution and Article 3 of the Prosecutor General’s Act.

Chief Justice of the Maldives Ahmed Muthasim Adnan administered the new PG’s oath of office.

RaajjeMV understands that Abbas has already met with employees at the Prosecutor General’s Office (PG Office).

The People's Majlis greenlighted his appointment as PG, on Tuesday.

The Judiciary Committee's report on his appointment was presented to the parliament floor during Tuesday’s sitting, where a vote took place. 85 parliamentarians voted in favor of his appointment as PG.

Abbas was interviewed by the committee on Monday and scored over 90 percent after which the committee unanimously decided to recommend his appointment to the position.

In the interview conducted on Monday, Abbas said that from the moment of his appointment, he would work to strengthen the operations of the Prosecutor General’s Office and that he would place great emphasis on timeliness as well as closely monitoring the productivity rate.

Abbas earlier served as the secretary to the President on Legal Affairs and Parliamentary Affairs at the President's Office.

The newly appointed PG was also a member of the Governing Board of the Maldives International Financial Service Authority.

Other positions he filled include member of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) as well as various other law-related positions.

Abbas attained his Bachelor of Law (LLB) from the University of Tasmania.
