Bank of Maldives (BML) has introduced Weixin Pay, more commonly known as WeChat Pay in overseas markets, as a payment method on its Point-of-Sale (POS) terminal network.

The country’s national bank in a press release issued on Monday, revealed that this will allow merchants to accept QR payments from the popular Chinese app.

WeChat Pay was only made available on the BML Payment Gateway, earlier.

Moosa Nimal, BML’s Director of Retail, Business and SME Banking revealed that they have rolled out WeChat Pay at merchants at Velana International Airport’s duty-free shopping.

Noting that by accepting WeChat Pay on BML’s POS network, Nimal stated that the bank is paving the path for more than one billion active users of the Weixin and WeChat platform to make payments at merchants across Maldives.

Nimal added that BML aims to continuously enhance the payment experience for our customers and merchants.

Further, he highlighted that the announcement means that the bank is now able to offer customers the choice and convenience to choose their preferred way to pay.

BML is the leading provider of merchant payment solutions in Maldives with a range of products and services to suit different business segments and customer preferences.

The country’s national bank presently accepts payments of all major debit and credit cards including American Express, Visa, Mastercard, Union Pay, as well as digital wallets including BML Pay, Ali Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay.

Merchants can now accept payments online anywhere with the bank’s Merchant Portal and mPOS App, using the service to send payment requests, check transactions and manage online stores, in addition to POS terminals.
