Severe swell surges have caused flooding in the carnival region of the Maldives capital, Malé City.

RaajjeMV understands that swell waves hit the capital on Saturday morning, flooding the carnival region as well as nearby streets.

The parking zone established in the region has also been heavily flooded due to the swell waves, causing damage to the vehicles parked in the region, with restaurants established in the region also experiencing negative impacts to their business.

This comes at a time Maldives Meteorological Service (MMS) has predicted swell surges during high tide times.

Further, a white alert is also currently in effect from Kaafu atoll to Thaa atoll, where heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected to prevail through 6pm.

The department went on to reveal that strong winds, heavy rain showers and thunderstorms are expected to prevail across southern and central atoll over the next 24 hours.

However, the weather is expected to be mainly fine in the north.

The weather forecasts moderate to rough seas in southern and central atolls as well as slight seas in the north.

The archipelago nation is currently experiencing a spell of bad weather conditions due to southwest monsoon showers, due to which the MMS has been issuing white and yellow alerts continuously over the course of the past few months.
