Former President Mohamed Nasheed injured in explosion

MPS have tweeted to confirm that the Police alert level has been raised to Level 3 as officers deployed in Male' investigate the explosion that left Speaker Nasheed injured earlier tonight.

Spokesperson for the President's Office Mabrook Azeez has revealed that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih will be meeting with members of the National Security Council later this evening.

Spokesperson Mabrook also stated clearly that the Maldivian government condemned the attack on Speaker Nasheed, and confirmed that MPS and MNDF officers were now investigating the case.

In an interview with Raajje TV, Minister of Home Affars Imran Abdulla has confirmed that while Speaker Nasheed had been injured in an explosion on Thursday, his injuries were not life-threatening or fatal.

Home Minister Imran also confirmed that in addition to Police and MNDF officers, foreign actors would also be contributing to investigative efforts in this case.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has condemned the attack targeting Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed, and has confirmed that the Maldives Police Service are now investigating the case.

The People's Majlis was confirmed to be convening for an emergency sitting at 10:30pm, following an explosion in the Maldives capital which injured former President and Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed, who is now receiving surgery.

Minister of Home Affairs Sheikh Imran Abdulla has stated that the explosion which targeted Speaker Nasheed will be investigated as a top-priority at the highest level by the Maldives Police Service (MPS).

Minister Imran also condemned the attack, which left Speaker Nasheed and three others injured, and expressed hopes that they recover quickly.

Minister of Defense and National Security Mariya Ahmed Did has strictly condemned the viscious attack on former president and Speaker Mohamed Nasheed.

In a tweet posted just hours after Speaker Nasheed was injured in an explosion, Minister Mariya stated that the attack showed a disregard for human dignity, especially during the last few days of the holy fasting month of Ramadan.

MDP's Chairperson Hassan Latheef has strongly condemned the attack on Speaker Nasheed's life.

Speaking to Raajje TV live, Chairperson for the Maldivian Democratic Party Hassan Latheef called for authorities to begin investigating the case at once.

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) have released a statement condemning the attack which injured MDP leader and former president Mohamed Nasheed, who is also the Speaker of Parliament for the 19th People's Majlis.

The statement explicitly condemned the terror attack which targeted Speaker Nasheed in the Maldives' capital on Thursday night, and expressed hopes that all those injured in the incident would recover swiftly.

The statement by MDP called the explosion which occurred on Thursday an "act of terror" and called for authorities to begin immediate investigations into the incident.

The Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) has strengthened security across the Maldives' capital, after former president and Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed was injured in an explosion early on Thursday evening.

The alert status for MNDF officers has been raised following the explosion, which is believed to be a premeditated terror attack targeting Speaker Nasheed.

Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar has expressed deep concern over the explosion which targeted Speaker Nasheed, and hopes that the Speaker will recover swiftly.

In a tweet posted shortly after Speaker Nasheed was reported to have gone into surgery, Dr. S. Jaishankar wrote in his tweet that Speaker Nasheed would "never be intimidated."

The opposition coalition, consisting of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and the People's National Congress (PNC) have released a statement condemning the explosion which left former president and Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed injured.

The statement called for a swift investigation into the case and expressed wishes on behalf of members of the opposition that Speaker Nasheed and all others injured in the attack recover swiftly.

Some cabinet ministers of the Solih administration and members of parliament are reportedly engaging in protests outside ADK Hospital.

Spokesperson for the President's Office Mabrook Azeez was seen accompanying President Solih into the hospital. A number of high-profile political leaders have gathered at ADK Hospital following the explosion, including members of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s parliamentary group.

With the latest update, at least four people have been injured in the explosion, including Former President and Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed and one foreigner who was at the scene.

The Maldives Police Service have requested that members of the public refrain from gathering at this time, as their officers are active in Male' City over the explosion.

Deputy Speaker of Parliament Eva Abdulla has confirmed that Speaker Nasheed is now receiving treatment for injuries sustained in the explosion.

Police and officers of the Maldives National Defense Force are active at the explosion site. A number of civilians have also gathered in the area, and are reported to have gotten into confrontations with law enforcement officers.

Those gathered claimed that the state had failed to provide Speaker Nasheed with adequate security as a high-profile member of the government.

The explosion occured at 8:39pm on Thursday evening, while Speaker Nasheed had been entering his car which had been parked outside his home.

Speaker Nasheed and a tourist were injured in the explosion.

Witness accounts from the scene describe other vehicles parked in the area damaged in the attack.
