The Maldives Met Office has issued a yellow alert signaling thunderstorms and torrential showers for the northern and central atolls

A fire has broken out on a boat in Thilafushi island.

The fire was reported on a vessel docked at the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) boatyard on the island, which has been used as a municipal landfill in the Maldives since the 90s.

Maldives National Defense Force Thilafushi Fire Station officers were deployed to the scene to control the blaze.

MNDF further reveal that they had received report of the fire having broken out at around 2:07pm in the afternoon on Wednesday.

The fire broke out at a time a yellow alert has been issued for a large swathe of the Maldives, between Haa Alif and Laamu atoll. The Maldives Meteorological Office expects that bad weather, with moderate thunderstorms and torrential rain, are to be expected between Haa Alif and Laamu atoll, with heavy showers projected for the northern and central atolls of the Maldives.
