Criminal Court has issued a 15-day remand for the suspect arrested in writer Yameen Rasheed’s murder.

Maldives Police Service (MPS), on Monday, arrested 25-year-old Mohamed Dhifran, from Gaddhoo of Gaafu Dhaalu atoll, in connection to Yameen’s murder.

Police is yet to confirm the arrest had any connection to the murder, but the court order, which RaajjeMV has acquired, notes that Dhifran was arrested, and his residence, Afsaanaage of Maafannu ward of the capital Malé, was searched in relation to the police investigation into the murder. The house is located near Yameen’s residence, Spatula, where he was stabbed to death.

Police said Dhifran was arrested and his residence was searched in relation to an ongoing investigation, but did not divulge further on the matter.

According to Dhifran’s family, he was not seen since dawn prayer on Monday, and police officers had escorted him to Afsaanaage at around 11 am on Monday; when officers proceeded to search the residence, confiscating some of his belongings.

Police had, on April 25, revealed that they had identified those responsible for Yameen Rasheed’s murder, even releasing screen captures of the suspects, taken from CCTV footage inside and outside Spatula. However, on April 30, contradicting their previous claim, police said that the attackers “had been wearing disguises”.

One of the most prominent bloggers in the country and pro-democracy activist Yameen Rasheed was killed in a barbaric attack in the early hours on April 23.
