Police commissioner visits site for police academy in Addu City

The College for Policing and Law Enforcement Academy is being developed in partnership with India

Commissioner of Police, Mohamed Hameed has visited the site for the National College of Policing and Law Enforcement, in Addu City, to oversee construction efforts at the site.

While the commissioner completed a two-day visit to the south city on Monday, he expressed content “with the improved efforts in policing by [the] team”.

The commissioner has also revealed that their goal is to have the building and construction efforts be completed as early as March 2021.

The National College for Policing and Law Enforcement is being established in partnership with the Indian government; Indian company, Sri Avantika Contractors Ltd. commenced work on-site back in 2017.

Among the facilities and resources being developed for the police academy are modern, user-friendly accommodation blocks, clinics, a training ground and even a helipad.

The gym on site is expected to host 800 people, and the academy will also boast a 400m running track, an auditorium that can host 340, and 8 classrooms with a maximum capacity to accommodate 320 officers-in-training. The new policing academy will also have a tennis court, basketball court and football field upon completion to be used by Maldives Police Service in training their officers.

Commissioner Hameed also met with police officers stationed in Addu, as well as the city’s mayor, other officials of the council and civil society representatives during his two-day trip.
