The basketball court in Hithadhoo district of Addu City has been reopened after renovations.

This is the first time in 20 years, that the court has undergone renovation.

The Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment backed the initiation by the island’s youth community, years after the court remained impractical.

In a Twitter post on Friday, the Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment Ahmed Mahloof revealed that they have renovated the basketball court after 20 years, with the immense support from Hithadhoo basketball players.

He highlighted that the paint under the renovation work was provided by Maziya Sports and Recreation traders, for which he expressed gratitude.

The sports minister went on to thank the FENAKA Corporation Limited branch in the southernmost city, Maldives National Defense Force southern region fire and rescue as well as everyone who supported the initiative.

Minister Mahloof took part in the virtual ceremony to reopen the court, after which a basketball match was held between Hithadhoo players.

The ministry has been conducting numerous development projects nationwide, having established quality turf football grounds in a number of islands as well as building outdoor volleyball courts, futsal grounds as well as social centers across the scatter of islands.
