'Run for Maldives' aims to break world record: Unix

The run commemorates the 55th Independence Day and celebrates the frontline workers battling the Covid-19 pandemic

‘Run for Maldives’, the biggest international virtual running event in the Maldives will aim to break the current world record, says its organizer.

‘Run for Maldives’, hosted by Unix Sporting will be kicked off on September 27, commemorating the World Tourism Day and is open globally, registration opportunity for the event was opened in early September.

Unix Sporting stated that they aim to make the virtual run, a record-breaking event to see the greatest number of participants in the five-kilometer run. The current record belongs to an event with 6,718 participants.

Managing Director of Unix Sporting, Reshan Shareef told RaajjeMV that those that complete the marathon will be entitled to a medal of participation as well as a ‘record break’ medal.

Highlighting that the event is seeing tremendous support, Shareef noted that a number of participants worldwide are registering. As such, 23 participants from outside of the island nation have registered thus far.

Registration has been opened for Maldivians with the deadline set at September 20 and international participants may register by October 15.

Anyone aged five and above can register for the marathon, featuring four main categories; 5.5 kilometers, 15 kilometers, 21 kilometers and 870 kilometers.

Only teams of five may register for the 870-kilometer category.

Participants of the marathon are required to complete the run within an allocated timeframe at their homes, on treadmills or in outdoor locations.

The running event celebrates the country’s 55th Independence Day and is also dedicated to the frontline workers in the response efforts against the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

Unix Sporting revealed that the initiative aims to spread the “spirits of togetherness and joy” in the face of the numerous restrictions revolving around the pandemic such as movement restrictions and lockdown measures to curb the spread of the infection globally.

The event will enforce adherence to physical distancing all the while maintaining significant bonds with families, friends and loved ones, said the organizer.

Further, Unix Sporting will award a free holiday in the Maldives for 10 lucky participants at Unix Sporting's partner resorts and hotels following a lucky draw which will be overseen by a licensed audit firm.

The event is endorsed by the ‘Sunny Side of Maldives’.
