Representatives of the opposition coalition have on Monday met with Akhilesh Mishra, Ambassador of India to the Maldives.

The meeting was held at the Indian Embassy in the capital Malé City late Monday morning.

Jumhooree Party (JP)’s leader Qasim Ibrahim led the meeting, and was accompanied by parliamentary group leader of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Ibrahim Solih, deputy parliamentary group leader of JP Abdulla Riyaz, while Yumna Maumoon represented her father, former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s faction of the divided Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).

Speaking to the press after the meeting, Qasim revealed that various areas were discussed in the meeting, including the public’s concern over the government’s activities.

Expressing concern over the various forms of harassment being forced on political figures and social media activists, MDP’s Solih revealed that they had "deliberated on ways to solve such issues".

Also speaking this afternoon, Yumna said that they had expressed concern over the various conflicts within the political arena, including arresting and raising charges on key political figures. She said that they had discussed on ways both parties can work to remedy the situation.

The political situation in the country has exacerbated as authorities continue to intimidate key opposition figures, including Qasim Ibrahim who was released from police custody on April 12, after what he calls ‘a six-day scholarship’.
