Mohamed ‘Nizambe’ Nizam has been selected as Maziya Recreation and Sports Club’s coach for the football season.

He signed the agreement with club at a ceremony held on Tuesday evening. Nizam will remain as the club’s coach until the next season.

Reports surfaced that Maziya was in talks with two local coaches to replace coach Marjan Sekulovsk last week. While the Macedonian has left the country following the end of his contract with Maziya, the club decided against renewing the agreement due to economic impacts faced by the club due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Maziya’s General Secretary said that they selected Nizam “given that he is the most experienced coach in the country” and highlighted his success in the international arena as well.

Some of Nizam’s biggest accomplishments were with TC Sports Club, who under his instruction moved to the first division and won the Dhivehi Premier League three consecutive years, as well as the Sheikh Kamal International Cup in 2017.

Speaking to the media at the signing ceremony, Nizam said that this is an important step in his career.

While Maziya is competing in the AFC Cup 2020, the club’s new coach’s aim is to “take the team further than any local club ever has”.

Nizam said that he has formed a plan, to reach this goal, adding that he has full confidence that this will be reached with the current squad.

His last coaching stint was with Bangladesh’s Saif Sporting Club, who competed in the country’s premier league. Nizam was the first Maldivian to be offered such an opportunity.
