Yameen will not get even three percent of the votes: MP Nazim
Postponed three times, the Local Council Election is now scheduled for May 6
MP Nazim says President Yameen will not get even three percent of the votes in a free and fair election
He said the opposition coalition will remain intact for both upcoming elections

President Abdulla Yameen 'will not be able to get even three percent of the votes if there is a free and fair election', says Mohamed Nazim, MP for Vaikaraidhoo constituency.

Nazim made the statement while speaking at an opposition rally at Maafannu Kunooz on Saturday night.

While Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has been traveling to various parts of the country as part of their campaign for the Local Council Elections, Nazim has been traveling with the team.

He said that what he has learnt from being a part of these trips ‘is that President Yameen’s faction is rapidly losing support of the people’ and that most of the public ‘is with the opposition coalition’. He said that this includes those members of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) that had voted to elect him as president.

He highlighted that they are not just talking about the council elections, but that the opposition coalition will remain intact for both upcoming elections. Local Council Elections are scheduled for May 6, while the presidential elections will be held in 2018.

Nazim said that they must use council elections to show the President Yameen does not have support anymore.

The Local Council Elections, initially scheduled for January 14, has been postponed thrice now, and is now scheduled for May 6. It was initially postponed by two months, in accordance to a ruling by the Civil Court, after President Yameen's faction of PPM filed a case at court, saying it was "unable to prepare for the council elections due to internal conflicts".
