Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment is seeking the counsel of relevant authorities, to restart sports events in the outlying islands.

While authorities are allowing congregational prayers in islands that are not under a Covid-19 lockdown, Sports Minister Ahmed Mahloof said that they have received requests from various islands to start sports activities since.

Noting that such decisions will be made by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) and the Covid-19 Technical Advisory Group (TAG), the minister said that he has sought their guidance on the matter.

A number of precautionary measures were placed across the country to curb the spread of Covid-19, with a nationwide public health emergency declared on March 12. This health emergency has been extended on May 31, and there is the possibility of another extension as well.

As part of these measures, sports activities were halted and all such stadiums and centers closed have been closed since March 15.
