The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) has issued a yellow alert and a white alert across regions where torrential rain showers are expected to prevail.

MET issued a yellow alert over the regions between Kaafu atoll and southernmost Addu City from 9am to 1pm on Monday, as torrential rain showers and thunderstorms have been predicted to prevail over the region.

The advisory also stated that average strong winds of 25 – 30 miles per hour are expected over the region with winds gusting up to 55 miles per hour.

The department also issued a white alert over the regions between Haa Alif atoll to Baa atoll on Monday morning, predicting strong winds of 19 – 24 miles per hour and gusty winds of 45 miles per hour in the region.

The white alert remains in effect through 9am to 2pm on Monday.

Generally, scattered rain showers with isolated squally showers and thunderstorms are expected over the south and central atolls.

Winds are expected to gust west to northwesterly at 15 – 25 miles per hour and may increase between 50 – 60 miles per hour during squally showers.

Further the department has predicted seas to be generally rough throughout the country.

The department urged individuals to be cautious of the adverse weather conditions and strong monsoon activities as swell wave surges have also been predicted during high tide times.

Addu City has been severely affected by heavy rainshowers which caused deep flooding throughout most of its districts, since the southwest monsoon began.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has also urged caution against the squally weather as the Covid-19 pandemic is far from being controlled in the country. The authority also urged caution against dengue and influenza.
