The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) has issued a yellow alert over the regions between Gaaf Alif atoll and southernmost Addu City as torrential rain showers and thunderstorms have been predicted to prevail over the region.
The yellow alert is in effect from 08:30am to 12:30pm on Sunday and torrential rain with thunderstorms are expected over the regions, along with average strong winds of 25 – 30 miles per hour and winds gusting up to 55 miles per hour.
The department urged individuals to be cautious of the adverse weather conditions and strong monsoon activities as swell wave surges have also been predicted during high tide times.
Generally, scattered rain showers with squally showers and thunderstorms are expected over the entire country and showers are expected to be heavy at times.
Winds are expected to gust west to northwesterly at 15 – 25 miles per hour and may increase between 50 – 60 miles per hour during squally showers.
Further the department has predicted seas to be generally rough throughout the country.
As the monsoon season is upon the island nation, the Health Protection Agency (HPA) has also urged the citizens to practice caution, especially with the wide-spreading Covid-19 virus across the country. Further, citizens have been urged to practice caution against influenza and dengue as well.
