The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) has issued a yellow alert over some regions where the weather conditions are expected to be squally.
The alert was issued over the regions between Laamu atoll and southernmost Addu City, after predicting torrential rain showers and thunderstorms.
The yellow alert is in effect from 10am to 2pm on Thursday and during this period, torrential rain and thunderstorms are expected to prevail over these regions with gusty winds of 45 miles per hour.
Fairly widespread rain showers and thunderstorms are expected over most of the Maldives, especially in the south while scattered rain with a few heavy showers are expected in the north and central atolls.
MET predicts seas to be rough in the south and moderate becoming rough throughout the rest of the country, and showers are expected to be heavy at times over the south.
In addition, surface winds are expected to vary between northwest to northerly at 7 – 15 miles per hour in the north and southwest to westerly at 15 – 25 miles per hour in the south and about 10 – 20 miles per hour in central Maldives.
MET urged all individuals to be cautious of the adverse weather.
As the monsoon season is upon the island nation, the Health Protection Agency (HPA) has also urged the citizens to practice caution, especially with the wide-spreading Covid-19 virus across the country. Further, citizens have been urged to practice caution against influenza and dengue as well.
