The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) has issued a yellow alert from Baa atoll to Vaavu atoll.

MET issued the yellow alert on Sunday afternoon, after predicting torrential rain and heavy thunderstorms in the region between 01:10pm and 03:30pm.

Earlier on Sunday, the department issued a white alert over the regions between Haa Alif and Kaafu atolls, after predicting heavy rain showers and thunderstorms.

The white alert was issued from 09:30am to 02:30pm.

The department predicts scatters of rain with heavy showers and thunderstorms to prevail over most parts of the island nation.

In addition, surface winds are expected to vary between west to northwesterly at 10 – 20 miles per hour in the south and 6 – 16 miles per hour elsewhere, with winds gusting 40 miles per hour during showers.

Met further predicts seas to be moderate becoming rough during rain showers in the south and slight becoming moderate throughout the rest of the country.

MET urged all individuals to be cautious of the adverse weather as swell wave surges are expected during high tide times over these regions.

As the monsoon season is upon the island nation, the Health Protection Agency (HPA) has also urged the citizens to practice caution, especially with the wide-spreading Covid-19 virus across the country. Further, citizens have been urged to practice caution against influenza and dengue as well.
