Maldives Police Service (MPS) has made a number of arrests in connection to drug busts in several islands.
Police media revealed on Saturday, that two individuals were arrested from Himmafushi island in Kaafu atoll in two separate operations conducted by officers stationed on the island alongside the police Intelligence Unit.
Arrested were two Maldivian men, aged 29 and 34 respectively.
The 29-year-old was arrested under a court order upon receiving a tip-off that he was included in a drug trafficking network, on May 5. 37 rubber packets filled with suspected narcotics were confiscated at his residence.
The 34-year-old was arrested the same day following similar allegations. Three rubber packets filled with suspected narcotics were found on him upon searching.
Both individuals have since been remanded by 15 days and both cases are under further investigations.
In another operation conducted by officers stationed at Makunudhoo island and police intel, an 18-year-old was arrested on May 6.
MPS was tipped off that the individual was involved in drug trafficking and officers found 15 pieces of paper filled with suspected narcotics, upon searching the 18-year-old's residence.
The Kulhudhuffushi Magistrate Court has since slapped a 10-day remand on the 18-year-old, who is to be remanded at a facility decided by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Makunudhoo Police Station has launched further investigations into the case.
In another drug operation, officers confiscated narcotics that were being smuggled in Maalhendhoo island in Noonu atoll, from Manadhoo island in the same atoll via speedboat.
Officers conducted the operation after being tipped off, on April 30.
The speedboat was ordered to return back to Manadhoo, en route to Maalhendhoo and officers raided the vessel upon which 26 rubber pieces stuffed with suspected narcotics, were discovered.
No arrests have been made in connection to the case thus far, and Manadhoo Police Station is probing the case.
