The Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) has urged residents of households in the Greater Malé Region under monitoring or quarantine, not to leave trash on the roadside.
WAMCO urged residents of households that have been quarantined or had monitoring measures placed on them due to the Covid-19 situation in the Maldives, not to leave their waste outside on the roads and that a team from WAMCO will collect waste from these houses.
The company’s Managing Director Adam Mohamed revealed that some of the households that have been placed under monitoring or quarantine are leaving their waste bags outside on the roads and that this must be avoided. He noted that residents of these households sometimes place their waste bags outside of the police lines draped across the entrance of their buildings.
WAMCO has continuously been urging residents of such households to stop this practice and keep their waste bags inside the apartment or building until a WAMCO team arrives for collection.
Despite challenges facing WAMCO workers in collecting waste from these houses and workers being unable to collect them every day, Mohamed revealed that workers will be collecting waste bags once every two days.
If workers are still unable to collect waste bags within two days, residents from these households have been asked to contact WAMCO.
Due to the lockdown imposed across the Greater Malé Region, WAMCO has been facing hindrances in carrying out their service. However, for safety, customers have been urged to double bag their waste and leave them on the roadside between 12pm and 2pm, when the workers will be active in collecting waste.
Customers have been asked to pay heed to the manner in which they dispose of their waste. As such, they have been asked to ensure it does not get in the way of vehicles or pedestrians.
WAMCO’s call center will be in operation from 10am to 4pm, customers may reach out for services through 1666.
