The country’s national airline, Maldivian has arranged emergency cargo flights between capital Malé City and Kulhudhuffushi City in order to carry essential supplies.
Kulhudhuffushi Council has revealed that they will operate a minimum quota of 1.5 tonnes of cargo via these flights.
The council will be scheduling a cargo flight every Thursday, in accordance with demand from the city residents.
The cargo flight will depart from the capital city at 9am and depart Kulhudhuffushi City at 10:55. The flights will land at Velana International Airport (VIA) within an hour.
Kulhudhuffushi City is required to follow the Island Aviation Services protocols when sending cargo and residents have been urged to contact the Kulhudhuffushi Social Support Desk at 6527173 in order to register to send goods to the capital.
Opportunity will be provided on a first-come first-serve basis and those who wish to send or bring in safety equipment and essential supplies will be given priority, especially in connection to the Covid-19 response efforts.
Residents who wish to acquire the cargo services will not be given the opportunity if their goods do not fit within the given quota and conditions.
The Director General of Public Health Maimoona Aboobakuru imposed a lockdown across Kulhudhuffushi City on April 21, set to expire on April 24 amid fears of a possible community spread of the Covid-19 virus.
It was extended a second time round for seven days, set to end at 12pm, May 1 and authorities extended the lockdown to another seven days, set to expire at 12pm on May 7.
Maldivian earlier arranged a cargo flight between the capital and Fuvahmulah City once a week as well.
