Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) has revealed that swell wave surges are expected during high tide times over some islands.

The department revealed that swell wave surges are expected over some regions in the central and southern atolls, until 8pm on Sunday and the weather is expected to be squally over southern atolls while thunderstorms and heavy showers will be experienced over the north.

Further, MET predicted the region to experience scattered rain showers and thunderstorms with surface winds gusting 8 - 18 miles per hour from west to northwesterly at 35 miles per hours during showers.

The department went on to reveal that seas are predicted to be rough during showers and generally rough throughout most of the country, going on to urge sea farers to practice caution.

This comes at a time the department also issued a while alert from Meemu Atoll to southernmost Addu City on Saturday night. The alert lasted through the night till Sunday morning.

As the monsoon season is upon the island nation, the Health Protection Agency (HPA) has also urged the citizens to practice caution, especially with the wide-spreading Covid-19 virus across the country. Further, citizens have been urged to practice caution against influenza and dengue as well.
