Authorities have lifted the lockdown placed on Kuredu Island Resort.
In a letter addressed to the resort’s General Manager, the Director General of Public Health, Maimoona Aboobakuru wrote that the resort has now been opened for entry and exit in accordance with the changes brought to the norm set under a previous directive issued by the authority.
According to the amendment brought to the previous directive issued to ban travel between resorts and inhabited islands, the measures are put in place should a person on the island or safari contract the virus, after the discovery of a Covid-19 case on the island or safari. In such a situation, a 14-day quarantine period is required if a symptomatic individual is detected within 28 days, after a 28-day period is up after the last positive case.
After this period, everyone exiting the resort or safari must undergo exit screening and will be subject to testing. Authorities are also mandated to ensure there are no remaining cases left on the island or safari.
The first two Covid-19 cases were reported from Kuredu Island Resort on March 7 after which the island was placed under lockdown. After that, a total of five foreigners on the resorts contracted the virus.
The lockdown has been lifted after a period of 60 days since the first case was discovered.
On March 9, Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem ordered to conduct a criminal investigation into allegations of criminal misconduct surrounding the initial spreading of Covid-19 after an Italian tourist who vacationed in Kuredu Island Resort tested positive to the virus after returning home. The first cases emerged after the tourist left the country.
