Maldives Police Service (MPS) has revealed that the crime rate has steadily fallen since the lockdown was declared across the Greater Malé Region.

Speaking to press on Wednesday night, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mohamed Riyaz revealed that the police statistics have revealed that the crime rate has significantly reduced since the lockdown was imposed on April 15.

He added that the crimes reported of recent include the theft of property kept outside the house or within reach.

Further, he stated that he believes the crime rate has dropped because offenders are currently under police custody, for several reasons.

Overall, the security and safety is observably stable across the Maldives, said Riyaz.

Shedding light on the special operation being conducted by the police in connection to the lockdown, police revealed that a total of 95 individuals had been taken into police custody by Wednesday and there are 72 currently under police custody.

According to police statistics for the previous year, the crime rate had been high during the fasting month of Ramadan. Cases of theft and violence were specifically high during this period.
