The Elections Commission (EC) has revealed that they will be announcing their decision regarding the Local Council Elections and the Women’s Development Committee Elections on Sunday.

EC announced the decision to delay both elections, during a press conference last Thursday.
This decision was taken as a safety measure and is followed by the government's decision to declare a state of public health emergency across the entire country, since the Novel Coronavirus, declared by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a global pandemic, surfaced in Maldives.
Voting has been delayed until April 18. President of the commission, Ahmed Shareef revealed that 18 April is the last date for the postponement.
If the period is further delayed, the commission is to take to court to seek a decision for the LCE, as this will require a legal solution.
Their decision comes at a time some political parties have been calling to delay the elections, initially slated for 4 April, amid growing fears of the Covid-19.
Several citizens have also been calling for the same, highlighting the risks the country would be exposed to should the elections proceed as initially planned.
