Maldivian women were among the people in the front lines to liberate the country from dark, terrifying and authoritarian days, says President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

Taking the podium at the “Rahvehi Festival” by main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s Women’s Wing on Saturday, the president stated that women also play a major role in building a society. As such, he highlighted that women were among the people on the front lines to liberate the country from the authoritarian and dark grip over the country for the past seven years.

Solih added that women will always be praised and appreciated for their hard work.

There was not a single day where MDP women weren’t seen in the protests. They spent seven long years among pepper-sprayed protesters and behind barricades to deliver a democratic government to the people. I saw it very closely. Female members of the party were also active in campaign activities, committees and movements. As such, I would like to express by gratitude to all the hard work by women”

Shedding light on the campaign activities proceeding full steam ahead, Solih said that the most important amendment recently brought to the Decentralization Act is to allocate 33% of council seats for women.

Highlighting that the people have begun noticing the increase of females in the political sphere, Solih stated that this is an important step to empower women in the political sphere.

Further, he highlighted that 440 women won the party’s recent primaries for the women’s development committee elections.

Solih stated that a lot of people play an important role to reform the nation, giving his assurance that the wages set for the members of the women’s development committees will ensure strengthening of facilities.

The president also shed light on several visions and policies the government have to resolve challenges facing women in the country.
