Incarcerated former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom was transferred to house arrest for a period of one hour on Thursday.
Some media outlets have cited the ex-president’s legal team having confirmed that Yameen was transferred to house arrest, earlier on Thursday.
This was done following a request by the jailed ex-president, said his legal representatives.
Speaking to RaajjeMV, Spokesperson at the Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) revealed that Yameen is under the supervision of the Maldives Police Service (MPS) for an investigation being conducted by the authority.
MCS Spokesperson went on to reveal that the authority does not know if he was transferred to house arrest or not.
RaajjeMV was unable to get a comment from the police at the time of publishing.
Yameen was convicted on money-laundering charges on 28th November 2019, after being found guilty of laundering USD through the state-owned Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) via a private company Scores of Flair (SoF), during his presidency.
Although he has appealed his sentence at the High Court, the court denied his request to transfer him to house arrest during the appeal process.
