Police released a statement on Thursday following the publications on some media outlets regarding his summon

Maldives Police Service (MPS) has revealed that former president Abdulla Yameen was not summoned to the authority over a case linked to a previously investigated case.

Police released a statement on Thursday following the publications on some media outlets regarding his summon.

The authority revealed that his legal team has been notified of the current investigations into accusations against the ex-president, highlighting that the legal team has been sent details through a written document.

Yameen was summoned for questioning over a separate case of money-laundering, said police.

He was accused of laundering an additional MVR 220,704,546 through the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), the statement reads.

Another case being investigated includes the laundering of MVR 1,900,000 given as loans to private companies.

This case, the police said, was previously under investigation as well.

He was also questioned about the laundering of MVR 1,118,000 acquired through bribery for resort development in Fuggiri island of Raa atoll. A statement has also been taken from Yameen in connection to this case, said police.

The statement goes on to urge legal representatives to refrain from acting in a way that soils the authority’s good name.

This comes at a time former vice president, Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed, Yameen’s lawyer has accused the police of “dancing to the beat of the government”.

Yameen was convicted on money-laundering charges on 28th November 2019, after being found guilty of laundering USD through the state-owned MMPRC via a private company SoF, during his presidency. Yameen was sentenced to five years in prison, and fined USD five million to be paid within six months.

While the police is probing additional cases against Yameen, his family has requested a transfer to house arrest over his declining health, at a time the High Court has denied a request to review the court’s initial decision to deny him bail arrangements and delaying his prison sentence.
