Members of the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) who were to camp out at Olhuveli Resort on Sunday night, have changed their overnight plans.

The group was to “camp out” at Olhuveli Resort on Sunday night; the eve of the no-confidence motion against parliament speaker, Abdulla Maseeh Mohamed. They were to hold a special gathering there as well.

They were to leave to the resort on Sunday evening, and return on Monday morning, ahead of the tomorrow’s parliament session which is scheduled to begin at 9 am.

However, they have changed plans since then, and are to hold a meeting at the head office of President Abdulla Yameen’s faction of the PPM in Malé City.

The meeting will begin at 9 pm on Sunday.

The ruling PPM has been divided into two factions since June 2016, with President Yameen and half-brother Maumoon Abdul Gayoom quarrelling over party leadership.

Maumoon officially withdrew support for President Yameen’s administration in November 2013, and has since joined the opposition in their work to reform the government.

He signed an agreement on Friday night, with opposition leaders, former President Mohamed Nasheed, Jumhooree Party (JP)’s Qasim Ibrahim and Adhaalath Party’s Sheikh Imran Abdulla, ‘to work jointly and together both in parliament and in the political environment” to reform the government.

Maumoon’s son, Dhiggaru constituency MP Ahmed Faris Maumoon is spearheading the no-confidence motion against the speaker, with the signatures of 25 other opposition lawmakers.
