Jailed former President Abdulla Yameen’s family has requested to transfer him to house arrest.
His legal team confirmed this, adding that the ministry made the request due to his declining health.
While the former president underwent heart-related medical tests at Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) this past weekend, the family’s request is based on his doctor’s recommendation.
His family noted that tests prove that his condition is worsening.
Yameen, during one of his appeal hearings, noted that he has been receiving treatment for the heart condition, even prior to his conviction last November.
He was convicted on money-laundering charges on 28th November 2019, after being found guilty of laundering USD through the state-owned Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) via a private company SoF, during his presidency. Yameen was sentenced to five years in prison, and fined USD five million to be paid within in six months.
The court rejected his request for bail earlier this month, as well as his legal team’s request to review this decision.
