Maldives will be filing a written declaration of intervention at the International Court of Justice in support of the Rohingya people, says the country’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid.
The declaration was made during his address at the High-Level Segment of the 43rd Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council on Tuesday evening.
Maldives intends to extend support for efforts to seek accountability for genocide against the people of Rohingya in line with a decision taken at the 14th Islamic Summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, said Shahid.
Said decision was taken after President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and the Cabinet of Ministers reached a verdict that there are “strong grounds” to intervene in support of the people of Rohingya, in the case submitted by Gambia.
Amal Clooney of doughty Street Chambers, an accomplished barrister and humanitarian lawyer, was appointed to represent Maldives in the case in the International Court of Justice.
Maldives is confident in her ability to seek accountability and judicial remedies for the displaced people, said the minister.
