President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has decided to seek parliamentary approval for ratification of amendments to the framework agreement on the establishment of the International Solar Alliance (ISA).
The decision was reached upon recommendations from his Cabinet of Ministers after deliberations during Tuesday’s cabinet meeting. The discussions were held following the submission of a paper by the Ministry of Environment.
During Tuesday’s cabinet meeting, the president and ministers deliberated on the new amendments.
Said amendment enables member states of the United Nations to become members of ISA, the initial framework agreement was signed upon the establishment of the alliance during April 2019.
The agreement was ratified by the end of April 2019.
The alliance is a treaty-based organization that works to utilize solar energy to meet energy demands of member states by activating over USD 1,000 billion into solar power by 2030. Further, it will accelerate, develop and deploy over 1,000 gigawatts of solar generation.
The organization was launched during November 2015 in Paris, France, at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (UNFCC).
Initially, membership was open to countries rich in solar resource and lies between the Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn.
