The High Court of the Maldives has revealed that hearings in their northern and southern branches will proceed on Sunday.
High Court’s northern branch is located in Kulhudhuffushi island in Haa Dhaal atoll and its southern branch is located in southernmost Addu City’s Hulhumeedhoo district.
Although administrative work of both branches are being carried out there, hearings will be held after judges from the High Court in capital city Malé arrive in the respective islands where the branches are located.
Hearings in the northern branch began on 22 October 2018 and the atolls included in the branch are Haa Alif, Haa Dhaal, Shaviyani, Noonu, Raa and Baa atolls. Atolls included in the southern branch are Gaaf Alif, Gaaf Dhaal, Gnaviyani and Addu City
In February 2018, Supreme Court ruled that delegations of judges will look into cases, instead of appointing judges to the branches permanently.
This decision was reached following the difficulty in appointing judges.
The first ever High Court was established in the Maldives in October 1980 and the hearings were carried out in the capital city.
