Maldives Police Service (MPS) has confiscated a large stash of alcohol inside the trunk of a taxi travelling to capital city Malé from its suburbs, Hulhumalé.

Police revealed that they were tipped off a little past 5pm on Monday and that officers had been dispatched to the region immediately.

20 bottles of alcohol were discovered inside bags tucked inside the trunk of taxi when officers stopped the taxi and inspected it.

The two passengers inside the taxi being operated by a Maldivian man, were expatriates, revealed police.

Officers also found alcohol on the 23-year-old and 24-year old expatriates upon searching them.

They have since been taken into police custody.

Police further revealed that the case is undergoing further investigations.
